The VanguardMerivale High School's NewspaperNovemeber, 1996 PM misses visit to MHSVanguard StaffPrime Minister Jean Chretien missed a scheduled visit to Merivale High School in mid-October due to pressing commitments elsewhere in the country. Chretien was supposed to visit the entrepreneurship class at the school to deliver a talk to the students about the value of entrepreneurs in the marketplace. CHretien ended up having to attend to business in Halifax during the week that he was scheduled to arrive at the school. Although rumors persists that Chretien will still visit Merivale at some point this year, no confirmation can be obtained. Chretien's visit would not be the first such visit to Merivale by a Canadian Prime Minister. In the early 1970s Canada's 13th Prime Minister, the Right Honourable John G. Diefenbaker, attended the commencement ceremonies and addressed some remarks to the graduating class. Diefenabker also attended the school's official opening ceremonies in December, 1964, where he presented the school with a bible, signed by himself and his wife Olive. The bible now resides in the principal's office. |
